Bike loop Churchill to Glenveagh National Park

By Velin G.

Also known as The Gartan Loop. I had a fantastic weekend with my bike and a good friend around Glenveagh, Donegal. It starts at Colmcille Heritage Centre, Churchill. We left the cars in the car parking there.

Moderate uphill incline until you reach Owenacoo River

We moved towards St Colmcille's Church, Glendowan, where the road is on the tarmac and has a moderate uphill incline. We took the uphill rise in that direction while chatting about random topics. The hill might challenge children or riders out of shape, but everyone can get up with enough breaks.

Steep downhill, moving towards the Lough Beagh, but what a view!

Steep at times, but fascinating views of the lake. We continued on the narrow gravel path. I focused on the downhill balance to avoid the big stones popping up at times. It isn't that bad. My toddler boy would take it without any issues. It's just I was out of shape. Don't forget to stop and enjoy the fantastic view of the lake. We renewed the chat and the slow peace ride when we got down the lake. Going downhill, we saw a few small waterfalls and the Astelleen Burn Waterfall.

Treats and the fabulous gardens at the Glenveagh Castle

Passing the lake on the gravel got us to the Gleanveagh Castle and gardens. Magical gardens with a castle, restrooms, and a tearoom. I still remember my surprise when I first saw the gardens. I had hard time believing what my eyes saw: a paradise between the rough Donegal hills. I got my tea with cake. I was "surprised" and ready for the moderate uphill we had to take after the castle towards Lough Inshagh.

Getting up to the Lough Inshagh, views on every turn.

It required some leg work while getting to the lake, but we had breaks to get most views and get some breath. The gravel uphill path is about 20 minutes on granny speed on the bike, so it shouldn't be an issue for most riders.

Getting down to Gartan Lough

On our way down, we had the chance to pass by Colmcille's (St. Columba's) Birthplace Cross, The Glebe Gallery, and the walking path on the Gartan Lough. Half gravel, half tarmac, the route took us back to the cars. We would stop at the Glebe Gallery for refreshments in different conditions, but we were wet from the rain pouring down for the last 20-30 minutes.

I had a great time catching up with a friend while enjoying the views. I would recommend that ride to anyone with a cross, gravel bike, or mountain bike.
