Discover the Beauty of Bonny Glen Wood in West Donegal

Bonny Glen Wood is a nature lover's paradise located 5 kilometres east of Portnoo. The wood offers a few easy-to-walk woodland trails around the picturesque lakes in the area, making it a perfect spot for a family outing or a peaceful hike.

Starting the Journey

The trails start from a large car park above the glen with a bit of a steep beginning to go down to the first lake - Bonnyglen Lough. The path is well-levelled and has fine gravel, leading you around the lake through a small bridge to a nice picnic area. You can either head back to the car park or continue your journey to the next lake - Lough Namanlagh.

Exploring Lough Namanlagh

The road to Lough Namanlagh is a forest road that leads you through greenery slightly up the hill. Soon you reach a crossroads - to the right, the road continues in the forest, probably bringing you back. Forwards, the road turns to a forest path beside a fence leading to Lough Namalagh. From there, a rocky and steep path takes you up the hill until you reach a fenced area beside the wind park, with a rocky road leading back to the car park.

Things to Consider

The whole walk is approximately 4 kilometres, and the first part is suitable for buggies, but it could be tough up and down the hill from the car park to the lake. Although it is possible to cycle, it is not recommended as the path is unsuitable, and you may need to push the bike often.

Experience the Beauty of Bonny Glen Wood

Bonny Glen Wood is a lovely and quiet area with changing landscape - lakes, forests, hills, and a wind park. From the rocky road, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and Errigal. While it is suitable for children, keep in mind that there are ticks in the grass, so be sure to check yourself, your kids, and your pets for ticks once you are back.
