Dunree Lighthouse: A Spectacular Site with a Fascinating History
Dunree Lighthouse, located on Dunree Head, is a small but stunning lighthouse that offers spectacular views of the surrounding areas. It was built in 1876 after the Duke of Abercorn requested better lighting for the Swilly, and the government chose this position above Dunree Fort for the new lighthouse.
The lighthouse is not open for visitors, but the fort and surrounding paths are worth a visit. From the top of the fort, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Lough Swilly across the Fanad Peninsula and the wild North Atlantic.
One interesting fact about the lighthouse is that it was designed to be only one story high, with the lantern attached at ground level to the front of the dwelling. This design was chosen because the government had no intention of disposing of their Martello towers located at Macamish and Dunree, as suggested by the Duke of Abercorn.
In 1927, the light was converted to unwatched acetylene, which meant that John Murphy, the keeper at the time, no longer had to keep a night watch.
Although visitors cannot enter the lighthouse itself, the history and architecture of the site are fascinating. Dunree Lighthouse is a must-see destination for anyone interested in lighthouses, history, or simply stunning views of the Irish coast.
