Killydonnell Friary

by Velin Georgiev

A hidden historical gem situated by the shore of the river Swilly

I felt peace and timelessness when entering the Killydonnell Franciscan friary, a hidden historical gem situated by the shore of the river Swilly. My imagination kicked in immediately upon entering the ruins, and I started dreaming about magical creatures once guarding that holy place.

The old headstones have different shapes and decor, some of which feel old, very old. The plants played a vital role in the decoration of the ancient ruins. I was amazed when I entered the building and saw all the different headstones deformed from the time. There are big windows from which you can see the Swilly river. You also can get a fantastic Swilly River view from the small parking in front of the Killydonnell Franciscan friary.

I managed to get there by bike from Letterkenny since it is just 12 km from the town and the road is all tarmac with small denivelation and almost no cars passing.
