St. John's Point Lighthouse: A Hidden Gem on Ireland's West Coast

St. John's Point Lighthouse is a hidden gem at the end of a 10-kilometre peninsula on Ireland's west coast, offering spectacular views of the surrounding region.

Getting to St. John's Point Lighthouse

Visitors can reach the lighthouse by either walking the 1.5 km asphalt road from St. John's Point Beach or by car. However, we highly recommend taking a scenic walk through the farmer's fields and taking in the beautiful views on both sides of the peninsula shore.

While the lighthouse is not accessible to visitors, you can walk to the EIRE 70 sign, about a 10-minute walk from the lighthouse. Remember that it is private land, so respect the rules and take your litter with you. Also, the area can be pretty muddy, so it is best to wear boots.

The History of St. John's Point Lighthouse

The history of St. John's Point Lighthouse dates back to 1825 when merchants and traders of Killybegs requested a light on the point. Designed by George Halpin Senior, the lighthouse's tower was made of cut granite and came into operation in 1831. It was automated in November 1932 and converted to electric operation 30 years later.

St. John's Point is a harbour light that guides ships from Donegal Bay and marks the north side of the bay leading to Killybegs Harbor, from the entrance up to Rotten Island. The area is also significant in the history of the Spanish Armada, as violent storms in 1588 drove up to 24 of its ships off course to the west of Ireland, with three of them being wrecked on nearby Streedagh Strand.

Conclusion

St. John's Point Lighthouse is one of 65 lighthouses operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights around the coast of Ireland. It continues to play a vital role in maritime safety today. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking to take in some breathtaking views, visiting St. John's Point Lighthouse is a must.
