Cruit island North-West beach
West Donegal
by Elena Whisperwind.
The wild beaches of Cruit island are great for everyone who likes quiet, beautiful places.
This sand side is hidden in the corner of Cruit island. You have to do a long drive on a narrow road, crossing the whole island from the bridge to the very top. There are two car parks in the Golf club land - one camping-style before the club building and the official golf club car park.
There are two ways to access the beach - one from the pier down the car parks and then walking on the sand until you find the place to your taste. The other is to walk through the dunes surrounding the official car park and go down when you find your dream location.
You can access a few beaches next to each other through the dunes, separated by rocks.
The sand is soft and clear as the water but very deep and with strong currents.
From the beaches, you see in the distance a massive land that ends up facing the ocean. That is the most northern point of Aranmore island - Torneady point.
On the other side, closer to you, is Owey Island.
You can find lots of sea shells and if you go closer to the pier, lots of sea glasses.
It is a beautiful, not so famous place and although the golf club above is peaceful and wild looking. It gives opportunities to explore and discover new sands.
